Mariners MV has always sought to actively live out the calling to be a church in the community, for the community. From the beginning, we knew our vision was far bigger than our building and we were intent on being a blessing where were planted, for however long God intended us to be here. Now, as our lease nears its end, we get to put that conviction to the test. The search for our new home has revealed a calling and vision beyond what we could have imagined: to reach beyond the ideals of being in the community for the community, to become a church that is in the county, for the county.

This September, we will unite Mariners Mission Viejo with Mariners Ocean Hills to establish Mariners Church South County on the existing Ocean Hills campus. Mariners Church South County will continue to be a place to worship, connect in community, and take next steps. As part of our expanded vision, Mariners Church South County will become a hub to equip and send out church leaders to transform our county.

The foundation of this next season is the belief that we can do more together: more for our families, more for our cities, and more to reach people with the love of Jesus.

WHY MARINERS CHURCH SOUTH COUNTY?

The decision to establish Mariners Church South County is fueled by two things: a distinct calling from God to pursue more ambitious, Jesus-centered goals; and God’s provision of the right timing and resources. This new, joint endeavor will enable us to serve the communities of South Orange County in new and bigger ways. In addition to being a home for people to encounter Jesus, Mariners Church South County will become a hub to equip and send out church leaders to transform our county. Currently, Mariners is equipping leaders to launch two new churches: one reaching the new community of Rancho Mission Viejo and another serving a new location in Mission Viejo (in the area north of Crown Valley Parkway and south of El Toro Road).

WHEN IS THE LAUNCH OF MARINERS CHURCH SOUTH COUNTY?

Mariners Church South County will hold its inaugural worship service on Sunday, September 9. Expect this Sunday to be a big celebration of what God has done and where He is leading us!

HOW DOES THIS FIT WITH OUR MISSION AND VALUES?

As a whole, our vision is to inspire people to follow Jesus and fearlessly change the world. Mariners Church Mission Viejo has focused intently on this calling since its inception in 2009. Now, the call to expand beyond our city, to be a church in the county, for the county, will enable us to act courageously upon this vision.

WHAT WILL THE LEADERSHIP LOOK LIKE AT MARINERS CHURCH SOUTH COUNTY?

Jeff Maguire will serve as senior pastor at Mariners Church South County, working closely with Jeff Pries who will serve as lead pastor and take on the strategic role of overseeing the development and equipping of leaders to plant new churches.

WHO WILL BE THE PRIMARY TEACHER FOR SUNDAY SERVICES?

Mariners Church is blessed with a community of seasoned pastors and teachers committed to teaching God’s Word in meaningful and engaging ways. Jeff Maguire will serve as senior pastor at Mariners Church South County and will be the primary teacher. Jeff Pries will serve as lead pastor and will continue to teach on a regular basis.

WHY IS MARINERS OCEAN HILLS CHANGING ITS NAME?

Ocean Hills Community Church, located in the city of San Juan Capistrano, got its name over 40 years ago and through the years it has been a welcoming home for people seeking to learn more about what it means to follow Jesus and a church the community could lean on for support and care. Building on this legacy, Jeff Pries became the pastor of Mariners Church Ocean Hills in 2013. Now, as our churches combine not just in location but through an expanded vision to be a church in the county, for the county, a new church with a greater vision is being established: Mariners Church South County.

ARE THE MARINERS MISSION VIEJO AND OCEAN HILLS COMMUNITIES SIMILAR?

Our communities share Mariners’ values to teach God’s Word, be God’s loving family, recognize that every believer is a minister with a ministry, be innovative in our ministry and relevant in our community, and be contagious in sharing Jesus Christ. Additionally, our communities are already geographically intertwined: Mariners Mission Viejo and Mariners Ocean Hills comprise people from virtually every city in South Orange County. By resourcing the combined gifts God has given and the strength built over the years at Mariners Mariners Mission Viejo and Mariners Ocean Hills, we will take new ground, and amplify the impact of God’s work in the South Orange County region: equipping leaders and planting churches where more people can encounter Jesus and experience the transformational healing only He can bring.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CHURCH THAT PLANTS CHURCHES?

Mariners Mission Viejo exists today because it were planted by another church (Mariners Church Irvine). Since its founding in 2009, Mariners Mission Viejo has grown to become a church home to people in virtually every South County city. At the core of our DNA is the belief in reaching more people throughout the county, and now we will step courageously into that calling to equip leaders to plant new churches.

WHERE WILL THE CHURCH PLANTS BE LOCATED? WHO WILL LEAD THEM?

Currently, we are already equipping leaders to initiate two new church-plants: one reaching the new community of Rancho Mission Viejo (launching September 23 at San Juan Hills High School) that will be led by Cole Beshore. and another serving a new location in or around Mission Viejo (in the area north of Crown Valley Parkway and south of El Toro Road) led by Erin Kerr launching within six to eight months.

ARE WE FINANCIALLY READY TO TAKE THIS STEP?

Without question, the work of God through the church is fueled by the generosity of His people. Through the careful stewardship of resources, Mariners MV achieved financial independence from Mariners Church Irvine early-on and continues to be financially healthy, operate responsibly, and utilize resources to advance the church mission. Careful planning guided by input from financial experts is underway to ensure prudent use of resources. Your continued commitment to generosity will continue to be crucial to our future.

HOW IS MARINERS CHURCH IRVINE INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS?

We have sought out Mariners Church Irvine and its experienced leadership to consult on our next steps. While the decision of our future rests on the leadership of Mariners Mission Viejo and Mariners Ocean Hills, the insight from seasoned leaders at Mariners Church Irvine is a tremendous benefit.

LOCATION

WHERE WILL MARINERS CHURCH SOUTH COUNTY BE LOCATED?

Mariners Church South County will be established at the current Mariners Church Ocean Hills location. This expansive property includes multiple greenbelt spaces, two playground areas, ample classroom, meeting and office space, a dedicated chapel, as well as a large worship center. You are welcome to visit - for more information about Mariners Ocean Hills including current service times, visit their website.

WHY DOES MARINERS MISSION VIEJO NEED TO MOVE?

From the beginning, we knew that because our current location at Crown Valley & Medical Center is a rented facility owned by Mission Hospital it could never be a permanent home. Accordingly, a team of professionals from ministry, finance, and real estate extensively researched properties and opportunities. While there is still time remaining in our current lease, our landlord (Mission Hospital) has already generously extended our lease twice before. Mission Hospital intends to expand its care offerings by building out their infrastructure, making another lease extension an impossibility.

WAS THERE A POSSIBILITY THAT MARINERS MISSION VIEJO COULD PURCHASE THE CURRENT FACILITY?

No. Because Mission Hospital has plans to expand its care offerings throughout its full property, purchasing the current facility is not an option.

WERE ANY OTHER LOCATIONS CONSIDERED?

In searching for our next church home, many locations and scenarios were evaluated. We believe this next season of our church is far more than a location change; this is a calling to step into more ambitious, Jesus-centered goals, and move boldly into new areas of ministry together.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE CURRENT LOCATION OF MARINERS CHURCH MISSION VIEJO AT MEDICAL CENTER & CROWN VALLEY?

The current facility for Mariners Church MV is owned by Mission Hospital and leased to the church. For years, the hospital has had plans to expand its care offerings, and will use the land where the church resides to build new infrastructure. In a sense, the land where Mariners MV started will remain a place of healing and restoration.
